NEW CHANNEL 2 DTV PILOT DETECTION AUDIO

Click on the image above to hear the new audio stream that monitors the pilot frequency of a Channel 2 DTV signal.  This is a very narrow signal that can easily be detected on a communications receiver in Single Sideband (SSB) mode.  This stream uses an Icom R8500 receiver in SSB mode set to 54.3090 MHz.  This produces an tone in the range of 900 to 1000 Hz when a Channel 2 DTV pilot signal is detected.  The results have been amazing thus far.  An almost steady stream of faint (often stronger) meteor scatter "pings" can be heard at any given time of the day or night.  During an actual Es opening, the tone is constant and very strong.  The best meteor activity is most often heard during the early morning hours.

These plots are created using Spectrum Lab V2.73.  The plot is a visual representation of the channel 2 DTV pilot detection audio, described above.  These plots are updated automatically every five minutes. Click HERE to view the latest plot.

Current Solar Report and Forecast

Solar activity was high.  Region 1045 (N23W01) produced two M-class events during the past 24 hours.  The first was a M1 at 06/2137Z and the second was a M6/1n at 07/0224Z.  The SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery observed a CME off the east limb with the first event and a full halo with the second event.  The M6 x-ray event had an associated EIT wave, and a Tenflare of 170sfu.  This region has retained a magnetic beta-gamma configuration with a possible delta magnetic configuration within its interior spots.  A new region was numbered today as Region 1046 (N25E65).

Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate with M-class events likely.  There is a slight chance for a X-class event from Region 1045.

The geomagnetic field was quiet.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled with isolated active conditions for the next three days (08-10 February) due to a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream and CME effects.

New FM/TV DX
(stations heard and logged here for the first time)

All FM stations are logged using two Denon TU-1500RD tuners with RDS.  The FM antenna system is an APS-13 FM Yagi at 50 feet.  A second APS-13 antenna at 35 feet is used with Andy Bolin's Phaser to null out undesired stations.  Analog TV receptions are made with a Dell W1700 TV.  Early DTV logs were made with a Hauppauge WinTV-D card.  Newer DTV logs are made with an Insignia STB.  TV antennas are the Delhi VIP307SR (VHF) and Channel Master 4228 (UHF).  All screen captures were made using a Hauppauge WinTV-D card.

FM / TV / DTV / AM SPREADSHEETS NOW AVAILABLE

NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD... I offer a variety of Excel spreadsheets, created using data extracted from the FCC's Consolidated Data Base System (CDBS) and the Canadian Broadcast Data Base System (BDBS).  Plug in your latitude and longitude, and these spreadsheets will calculate the azimuth and distance to every listed facility.  The U.S. and Canadian spreadsheets are typically updated each week.  Mexican FM & TV spreadsheets are updated only when new data is discovered.  These are very useful tools for the serious FM, TV and AM DXer. These spreadsheets may be freely used and distributed.

For additional information about these spreadsheets, including release notes, click HERE.

NOTE:  Until the FCC catches up with all the recent changes associated with the analog shutdown and various DTV flash cuts, the US DTV spreadsheet will likely contain some outdated or incorrect data.  The US Analog TV spreadsheet has been discontinued.
